Storyline
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead
after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has
survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet.
With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and
spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.
Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work
tirelessly to bring "the Martian" home, while his crewmates
concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these
stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root

Trivia
In the scene concerning Project Elrond, Sanders says he wants his codename to be Glorfindel. Glorfindel appears briefly in The Lord of the Rings, though his one scene was given to Arwen for the film version. An elf called Glorfindel also appears in The Silmarillion, though it has never been established whether J.R.R. Tolkien intended these to be the same individual. See more »Goofs
There is a delay in radio communication between Mars and Earth due to the signal speed and the huge distances involved which spans between 4min to 24min one way. So even at closest proximity between Mars and Earth a message could exchanged only every other 8 minutes, even if every party answered immediately. So real time text messaging as in the movie could not be achieved and Kappoor would never have been embarrassed by Mark asking "Are you receiving?" when failing to respond. See more »Quotes
Mark Watney: I've been thinking about laws on Mars. There's an international treaty saying that no country can lay claim to anything that's not on Earth. By another treaty if you're not in any country's territory, maritime law aplies. So Mars is international waters. Now, NASA is an American non-military organization, it owns the Hab. But the second I walk outside I'm in international waters. So Here's the cool part. I'm about to leave for the Schiaparelli Crater where I'm going to commandeer the Ares IV ...See more »
Crazy Credits
Disco music, which had been a running gag throughout the film, is played during the ending credits. Appropriately, the first song played is "I Will Survive," which features the lyric "And so you're back, from outer space." See more »Connections

User Reviews
Original idea surrounded by clichés
"The Martian" is
futuristic yet plausible, which makes it bold but not necessarily
original, the entire movie is surrounded by space clichés. Not just in
details like in "don't let go of my hand into space" but a lot more have
already been covered in other movies, like having the help of another
country in a complicated mission, you don't wanna compare but they force
it, makes it impossible to give them a break.
The slow timing makes it boring, when watching a space movie you expect more thrilling scenes. The entire story takes place in over a year and that's not very well played. Because everything takes so long to happen... When it does... it's almost as if nobody cares anymore. So the movie lacks that timing tension that is important in cases like this.
The acting is good, the story line is digestible, very scientific, Matt Damon's character talks cool nerd all the time, I'm satisfied with the experience but I wouldn't recommend it as a great (must see), mainly because it did not reach my expectations.
